The Wall Street Journal had a good story yesterday about how the 4 door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has been outselling the traditional 2 door model "mainly on the strength of its marriage of off-road capability with greater practicality and comfort." The article compared the success of the Unlimited to the 1970's Jeep CJ-7. The CJ-7 had a longer wheelbase than the CJ-5 targeting greater comfort in addition to off-road capabilities. The CJ-7 went to market with much different messaging that Jeep had pushed with previous models. But Jeep has continued to build on the idea over the years moving beyond their stronghold off-road to appeal as a lifestyle vehicle as well.
